I am directed by Secretary Grey to forward

herewith, to be laid before the Board of Trade, copies

of a correspondence which has taken place on the sub-

ject of the registration of companies at Shanghai

between the Judge of His Majesty's Supreme Court for

China and this Department, together with the observa-

tions of His Lajesty's Minister at Puking.

I am further to transit herewith. a copy of a

letter, dated 9th, March last, from the China Associa-

tion; and two copies of a confidential memorandum

drawn up by the Librarian of the Foreign Office, show-

ing the present position of Shanghul Companies'

registration.

I am to explain that up till now the usual prac-

tice has been for British companies which desire to

carry on business at Shanghai or elsewhere in China to

be registered at Hongkong, but this system is ceasing

to the Board of Trade.
